The revival of the marathon at the historic 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens sparked global enthusiasm for Track & Field, which led directly to the inaugural BAA Boston Marathon in 1897. This Olympic and local athletic fervor influenced high schools across New England, establishing SHS as a pioneer when it established T&F as a spring sport in 1898. The opening of Somerville High’s new track in 1898 featured an invitation showcase of the top 4 record breakers from the ‘98 BAA marathon, which had taken place in the weeks prior, in a mile race. Ronald McDonald, the 1898 BAA marathon winner, raced John McDermott (winner of the first BAA event in ‘97) and 2 other record breakers-Hamilton Gray and R.E. McLennan) before Somerville High and Cambridge English High competed in the first local team event. Much later in 1975, long after we had landed astronauts on the moon, SHS established our first female team in response to the implementation of the landmark 1972 civil rights legislation. See the awesome record results below.
